Materials Requirements Planning is born
The earliest ancestor of ERP came out of manufacturing, where businesses needed a way to calculate raw-material and component requirements against production schedules. Early MRP systems ran on mainframes and were affordable only to the largest manufacturers.

SAP is founded in Germany
Five former IBM engineers founded SAP with the goal of processing business data in real time. Its early product, SAP R/2, integrated finance and logistics on mainframe hardware — a direct precursor to modern ERP.

Every business searching for “ERP” eventually runs into the same handful of names. Here’s the short history behind each.
SAP
Founded in 1972 in Walldorf, Germany, SAP built its reputation on real-time data processing — first with the mainframe-based R/2, then the client-server R/3 in 1992, which became the default ERP for large manufacturers globally. Its current flagship, S/4HANA, runs on an in-memory database and remains the most common ERP system among large multinational enterprises.
Oracle
Oracle entered ERP through its database dominance, building Oracle Applications (later E-Business Suite) through the 1990s and 2000s. Its 2016 acquisition of NetSuite — the 1998 cloud-ERP pioneer — gave Oracle both an enterprise-grade on-premise product line and one of the earliest true cloud ERP platforms under one company.
Microsoft Dynamics
Microsoft assembled its ERP portfolio through acquisitions of Great Plains and Navision in the early 2000s, which became Dynamics GP and Dynamics NAV. These have since been consolidated into Dynamics 365 Business Central and Finance & Supply Chain Management, tightly integrated with the rest of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
NetSuite
Founded in 1998 as NetLedger, NetSuite is widely credited as the first company to build ERP specifically for internet delivery, years before “SaaS” or “cloud computing” existed as terms. Oracle acquired NetSuite in 2016, and it remains a leading cloud ERP choice for mid-market companies.
Odoo
Founded in Belgium in 2005 as TinyERP by Fabien Pinckaers, Odoo grew into a modular open-source platform covering ERP, CRM, e-commerce, and website tools, priced per app rather than as a single bundled suite — part of the broader shift toward flexible, self-serve business software.
Tally
Tally began in India in 1986 as a simple accounting package and became one of the most widely used business software products in South Asia. TallyPrime remains dominant for small business accounting, though it lacks the multi-module breadth — inventory, manufacturing, CRM, HR — of full ERP systems, which is why growing Tally users are frequently the ones searching for a true ERP upgrade.
ERPNext
ERPNext’s story starts in 2006, when Rushabh Mehta, working in his family’s furniture manufacturing business in India, ran into the limits of a poorly implemented proprietary ERP and began building his own. He founded Frappe Technologies in 2008, released ERPNext publicly in 2010, and open-sourced it under the GPL in 2011. Built on the Python-based Frappe framework, ERPNext has since grown into one of the most widely deployed open-source ERP systems worldwide, covering accounting, inventory, manufacturing, CRM, HR, and project management in a single data model, with the option to self-host or run on the vendor’s managed Frappe Cloud.

How ERP deployment has evolved
The technology underneath ERP software has shifted roughly every decade: mainframes in the 1960s–70s, client-server architecture from the early 1990s, internet-enabled systems through the 2000s, and cloud/SaaS delivery becoming the clear default through the 2010s. Each shift lowered the cost of entry — mainframe ERP was only viable for the largest manufacturers, while today’s cloud and open-source ERP systems are accessible to a five-person company on day one.
How ERP has evolved by business size
ERP software spent its first three decades as an enterprise-only category, because implementation and licensing costs put it out of reach for smaller companies. Two trends changed that: cloud delivery, which removed the need for in-house infrastructure, and open-source ERP, which removed licensing cost from the equation entirely. That’s the gap platforms like ERPNext and Odoo were built to fill — full ERP capability without the enterprise-only price tag that defined the category for its first thirty years.

Open-source ERP is positioned well for this shift, since its exposed codebase makes it straightforward for a community or implementation partner to build and ship these capabilities without waiting on a single vendor’s release cycle.
